Guide for tattoo fans

Tracking how a tattoo ages

Whether and how much a tattoo fades over the years only becomes clear when you compare: capture it once a year under the same conditions, as a photo or a 3D scan, and put the pictures side by side or on top of each other. Memory alone is no reliable guide.

How a tattoo changes differs from person to person. Whether a touch-up makes sense is something to discuss with your artist.

Why record changes?

  • Memories

Even many years later you still know what your tattoo looked like at the start.

  • Talking to your artist

With before pictures, a touch-up is easier to discuss than with "it used to be bolder".

  • Before a cover-up or laser

If a tattoo is meant to change, its last state before that is on record.

  • Your collection

All your tattoos with dates and history in one place.

What can change

Lines and colours change over time. Contrasts can soften, fine lines can look a little wider, light colours paler. How much and how fast differs from person to person.

This guide does not explain why this happens and gives no aftercare tips. Your artist answers questions about it; for changes to your skin, see a doctor.

A simple routine

  1. Pick a yearly date

For example the tattoo's anniversary. If you want, Inkmirra reminds you once a year.

  2. Take it the same way

Same place, same light, same distance, same pose.

  3. Capture

Full view and details as photos, or all around as a 3D scan.

  4. Compare

Put the new and old picture side by side or on top of each other.

Comparing before and after properly

Two photos side by side are easily misleading: a different angle alone makes lines look different. So keep the same setup, or compare scans you can rotate.

With Inkmirra you link several scans to one tattoo. They are aligned automatically, then you blend, wipe with a slider or play them one after the other.

Questions about tattoos over the years

How often should I capture my tattoo to see changes?

Once a year is enough for a long-term comparison, for example on its anniversary. What matters is that you always take it the same way.

Does every tattoo fade?

Lines and colours change over time; how much differs from person to person. Your artist can give you an assessment of your tattoo.

Will Inkmirra tell me whether I need a touch-up?

No. Inkmirra documents and compares, it does not assess anything. Whether a touch-up makes sense is something to discuss with your artist.

How do I compare old and new scans?

Link both scans to the tattoo. Inkmirra aligns them, then you blend, wipe or play them one after the other.

Can I add old photos?

Yes. In the tattoo journal you create entries with up to 4 photos, for example with pictures from earlier years.
